FCE II Writing Project!

This year FCE II has taken part in a wonderful experience: exchanging e-mails with other learners of English as a foreign language. Their writing teacher, Alejandra Scotti, contacted a teacher in England, and the two groups answered the following task:
"We´re doing a project this month at school on eating habits and customs around the world. Will you be able to help me by telling me what the traditional meals are in your country and what people typically eat?" 
Students were delighted to receive answers from places such as Saudi Arabia, Italy, Spain and Venezuela.

 Hello there,

I’m very well, thanks for your message and I’m really happy to help J  It was also really nice to find out what you eat in Argentina.  I’m very surprised and I liked the photos!

So, before answering your questions, you may need to know where I’m from?
My name is Abdulrahman and I’m from Saudi Arabia .

In Saudi Arabia people usually eat three meals a day, firstly, the breakfast which starts between 6 and 9am, and includes some eggs, sliced cheese, jam with a cup of tea or Arabian coffee.
Secondly, for lunch (1 – 3:30 pm) people tend to eat the traditional dish which is called Kabsa and it includes some chicken or lamb with rice as you can see in the next picture:
 


  

Finally, for dinner (8 – 11pm) people don’t eat a particular kind of meal, I would say it depends on the person, some people like to eat sandwiches and some others like to eat fast food.

If you want to know more about the traditional meal in my country, as I said before it called Kabsa and you can easily find the recipe on google searching for ‘Kabsa recipe’ .

Thank you for asking us to help you,, I’m glad to write this letter to you and I really liked the descriptions of your food in Argentina!

I’m Alaa from Saudi Arabia I’m gonna tell you about the popular meals, like Kabsa, and when we eat it. First of all the most important meal is lunch which is the heaviest meal, we tend to take it between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm. We usually have rice and, as I said before, the most delicious dish is called Kabsa. As you see in the picture below.



We cook the kabsa with chicken or lamb it depends on the person. If we cook it with lamb we cook the lamb and rice together and if we cook it with chicken we roast the chicken separately. And this is the most interesting course in our culture, I hope it is gonna help you in your research!

Dear students of Argentina!

How is everything? It is a pleasure to receive your email. I am glad to help you. The eating habits in my country, Spain, are as follows.

In Spain people usually have breakfast around 8 o’clock in the morning before going to work. After that and before lunch (because we are used to having lunch later than in other European countries) we have a snack around 11.  Lunchtime is typically between 2 and 3, it depends on the time people finish work. Having lunch at this time, we usually have another snack at 6 30 for the same reason that I explained before, we are used to having dinner late, around 10 pm.  People usually eat all kinds of food; we have a lot of types of meat, fish, and vegetables.

A common traditional meal in Spain is Spanish omelet, the principal ingredients are potatoes and eggs, and, depending on the person, onion can be a good ingredients as well. You can have it with ham and cheese or tuna and mayo on the top.  It’s delicious!

Dear friends from Argentina!

I’m writing to you because it’s a pleasure for me to answer your questions, so I’m gonna start talking about when and what do people in Venezuela typically eat. We usually have five meals during the day, breakfast, lunch, dinner and two snacks. For breakfast we tend to have arepas with cheese, ham and butter (Typical course from Venezuela); for lunch, we usually eat different type of meals like pasta, chicken with rice, lasagna or beans, and for dinner we tend to have a small portion of food, could be salad, or a small arepa with tuna or chicken; for the snacks we generally have a piece of fruit.


I’d like to talk about the arepas which is one of the traditional meals in my country. In my opinion it’s delicious and also healthy.  It can be filled with a lot of options, could be cheese, ham, chicken, beef or tuna. It’s an excellent option for breakfast but people in Venezuela eat it at any time because they are really versatile.

 I hope I’ve helped you with your research.

It is my pleasure to hear from you.  I really liked all the information and photos of your food in Argentina.

Actually, people in my country have three different times to eat.
The first is breakfast in the early morning which mainly consists of one kind of drink and bread or any kind of wheat products.
The second meal of people is lunch which is considered the main meal for the most, and it is usually kabsa which is mainly made from rice and meat, it could be chicken or lamb, and it is usually served in the middle of the day.  You can see a picture of this below.
Finally the last meal is dinner and it is usually light and served after sunset.

Dear students from Argentina.
Hi, how are you? I want to start by telling you thank you for your interest in knowing my country and thank you for telling me about yours.  It was very interesting.  So I’m Fabio Galli and I live in Milan, but now I’m studying in LSI in Portsmouth.  The people from my country tend to eat different dishes, this depends where you live, for example the people from south Italy prefer eating spicy food and in the north of Italy, they prefer eating light food but all over Italy we tend to eat pasta and pizza.
Today I want to tell  you about a famous dish from north Italy: Pizzoccheri.
If you live in the north Italy probably you eat pizzoccheri 6 or 10 times in a month.  Making pizziccheri is easy, so buy:
·        Flour wheat and flour or Pizzoccheri already made (it is similar to pasta)
·        Cheese and butter
·        Potatoes
·        Cabbage

Mix together wheat flour 1: 2 with water and make a dough to create the pasta. Cook potatoes and cabbage in the water with a little salt on the hob. When it is halfway cooked, add the pizzoccheri. When all is ready drain it and add a lot of cheese and wait until this in melted and your dish is ready!
